Model Context Protocol, or MCP, gives an AI application a standard way to connect with tools and information sources. In market research, that can support workflows such as finding earlier studies, preparing a questionnaire or retrieving evidence for a report. The connection does not establish research validity or grant permission to launch fieldwork.

The useful starting point is a small job with a clear stopping point. “Find the evidence behind this recommendation” is easier to control than “do our research.” Once the narrow workflow works, a team can decide whether a broader sequence is worth automating.

## What does MCP connect?

The [MCP architecture documentation](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/2026-07-28/learn/architecture) describes hosts, clients and servers. In practical terms, the researcher's AI application connects to a server that exposes an agreed set of capabilities. Those capabilities might retrieve documents, call a service or perform a permitted action.

The distinction between reading and acting is central. Searching a repository and sending invitations are different kinds of operation. Give the assistant access to the first without assuming it also needs the second.

An MCP connection also does not guarantee that two research products share a common study model. One system's “participant” may be another system's contact record. Map identifiers, statuses and permissions explicitly before passing records between them.

The five workflows below are implementation patterns. They are not a list of documented PulseLake MCP endpoints or tool names.

## 1. Find what the team already knows

A product manager asks whether customers have previously discussed invoice exports. The agent searches accessible studies, retrieves relevant passages and returns a short answer with links to the underlying evidence.

The first decision is scope. Should it search completed studies only? Are internal hypotheses included? Can it access another client's material? Set those boundaries through permissions and explicit search filters rather than expecting the model to infer them from filenames.

A useful result contains the study date, audience, question context and evidence location. It should distinguish a participant's statement from a researcher's interpretation. If the repository contains no relevant study, the correct result is a gap in evidence, not a confident answer assembled from general knowledge.

Have a researcher inspect a few retrieved records before treating the workflow as dependable. A quoted sentence can be accurate and still misleading if it answered a different question or came from a different customer segment.

## 2. Turn a brief into a reviewable study plan

An insights lead supplies a decision, target audience and constraints. The agent retrieves approved questionnaire patterns, proposes a study design and saves a draft for review.

For a pricing project, the agent might surface existing guidance on question order and flag missing information about purchase responsibility. It should not silently choose a price range or invent a baseline conversion rate. Those are inputs that affect the study's meaning.

The output should explain why each section exists. A reviewer can then remove questions that do not change a decision, check screening logic and identify sensitive information the study does not need to collect.

Keep the draft state distinct from approval. Saving a plan should not create a paid order, recruit participants or email a client. Those actions need their own explicit step and an opportunity to inspect the exact audience, instrument and cost.

## 3. Rehearse an instrument before human fieldwork

The agent takes an approved draft and runs a structured rehearsal. It can check for duplicate questions, inconsistent response options and instructions that refer to material respondents will never see.

If the workflow includes synthetic respondents, label the output as simulated. Use it to explore possible misunderstandings under stated assumptions. Do not report the resulting preferences as market demand.

A fictional example makes the boundary clear. A questionnaire asks respondents to compare “standard” and “advanced” reporting without defining either. A simulated answer may expose the ambiguity. The researcher should fix the descriptions and then check comprehension with people from the intended audience.

Keep a change log connecting each suggested edit to a reason. “The model preferred this wording” is weak justification. “This option overlaps with another response category” is something the reviewer can evaluate directly.

## 4. Build an analysis packet with traceable evidence

After fieldwork, the agent retrieves the permitted study data and prepares an analysis packet. It might assemble question-level summaries, candidate themes, supporting excerpts and a list of unresolved contradictions.

Calculations should use the actual dataset through a calculation tool or established analysis process. A language model should not estimate a percentage by reading a handful of comments. Record the denominator, exclusions and treatment of missing values alongside every reported figure.

For qualitative analysis, preserve the route from a theme to the original response. A theme supported by many short comments and a theme supported by one detailed interview may deserve different treatment. The packet should make that visible.

PulseLake is a research operating system that connects study design and evidence collection with structured analysis, interpretation and reporting. Its research frameworks organise questions and measures into dimensions and sub-dimensions. That structure gives the evidence a shared meaning and makes it usable for analysis beyond an individual response or survey.

PulseLake already has internal Copilot analytics tools for Workbench results, pivots and benchmarks. Those tools use the study context and shared calculation services. External agent access still requires a verified interface and permissions.

## 5. Answer stakeholder questions without losing context

A stakeholder asks, “Did customers dislike the feature or just the setup?” The agent searches the approved evidence and prepares an answer that separates the two explanations where the data allows it.

This workflow works best when the assistant can return a bounded answer: which study it used, which audience it covered and what remains uncertain. If the study did not distinguish setup from ongoing use, the assistant should say so and suggest a follow-up question.

Permission checks still matter at presentation time. A stakeholder may be allowed to see an aggregate result but not raw recordings or identifying details. Retrieval access and answer-sharing access should follow the same project rules.

A good stopping point is a saved answer with evidence links. Sending it to a client or adding it to a public report should be a separate, deliberate action.

## What does a safe handoff look like?

| Workflow | Allowed starting action | Reviewable output | Separate approval point |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Prior research search | Read authorised records | Evidence summary | Sharing outside the project |
| Study planning | Read templates and save a draft | Questionnaire and rationale | Launching fieldwork |
| Instrument rehearsal | Analyse the draft | Issues and proposed edits | Replacing approved questions |
| Analysis packet | Read approved study data | Calculations and source excerpts | Publishing conclusions |
| Stakeholder question | Search permitted evidence | Answer with limitations | External delivery |

Treat retrieved content as evidence, not instructions. A transcript or uploaded document could contain text that tries to redirect the agent. The [MCP security guidance](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/2026-07-28/tutorials/security/security_best_practices) is a useful reference for the integration team; application permissions and human review must still be designed for the actual research workflow.

## Which research tools expose MCP today?

Start with vendor documentation rather than assuming that an AI feature implies MCP support. [User Intuition publishes an agent research guide](https://research.userintuition.ai/) describing hosted MCP access and research workflows. Confirm its current authentication, tool scope and approval behaviour before connecting a production account.

For PulseLake, this article describes relevant research workflows rather than promising an undocumented public MCP server. A deployment discussion should establish the available interface, tenant boundaries and supported actions before anyone writes configuration around it.

When evaluating any provider, ask for a read-only demonstration first. Retrieve a known study, inspect a source quotation and attempt a request outside the permitted project. These simple checks reveal more than a polished end-to-end demo with unrestricted access.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does MCP perform the research itself?

No. MCP defines a connection between an AI application and exposed capabilities. The research method, data quality, permissions and interpretation depend on the tools and workflow connected through it.

### Can an agent launch a paid study automatically?

That depends on the integration. Design the workflow so study launch requires explicit authorisation after the audience, questionnaire and cost are visible. Reading a draft should not imply permission to spend.

### Can synthetic participants be included?

Yes, where the connected system supports them. Keep their outputs labelled and separate from observed human evidence, and use a validation plan appropriate to the decision.

### What should we automate first?

Begin with retrieving known evidence or preparing a draft analysis packet. These tasks produce inspectable outputs and help the team establish permissions, source traceability and useful stopping points before automating consequential actions.
