Free finance operating model maturity assessment
Fifteen questions, five dimensions, about ten minutes. Your answers stay in your browser.
This free self-assessment scores a finance operating model across five dimensions in about ten minutes: structure and service delivery, processes and controls, data and technology, planning and insight, and people and governance. Answer fifteen questions to get a maturity score for each dimension, an overall level and a next step for each.
What does this assessment measure?
A finance operating model describes how the finance function is organized, how it runs its processes, which data and technology it uses, how it plans and measures performance, and how its people and decisions are governed. This assessment turns those five areas into dimensions and asks three questions about each.
The questions come from practice in finance operating-model redesign. They describe what the work looks like at each level, so you can answer by recognizing your own organization rather than by rating yourself.
How is it scored?
Each question has four answers, scored one to four from the first, ad hoc, to the last, optimized. Your score for a dimension is the average of its three answers, and your overall score is the average of all fifteen.
| Average score | Level |
|---|---|
| Up to 1.75 | Ad hoc |
| Above 1.75 to 2.5 | Developing |
| Above 2.5 to 3.25 | Defined |
| Above 3.25 | Optimized |
Ready to score your finance operating model?
Choose the answer that best describes what happens today, not what is planned. If two answers fit, choose the lower one.
How should you read your results?
Look at the shape before the total. A strong overall score can hide one weak dimension that holds everything else back, and a low score in a dimension you are not about to change matters less than a middling score in one you are.
Compare the highest and lowest dimensions, then ask whether the gap is a choice or an accident. The next step for each dimension is a starting point for a conversation, not a plan.
What does a sample assessment not tell you?
It is a self-rating by one person, so it reflects one view. Different people in finance and in the business often rate the same function differently, and the differences are usually the most useful finding. It also has no outside comparison.
A full assessment asks several respondents, shows how their answers differ by dimension and role, and keeps results from past engagements so a client can be compared with itself over time.
How do you run this with a team or a client?
In PulseLake, a maturity assessment is a study type with scored questions grouped into dimensions. You send one link to many respondents, each sees their own maturity result, and you get aggregate scores by dimension, filtered by role or region, with Excel exports and reporting for the people who decide. Frequently asked questions
How long does the finance operating model assessment take?
About ten minutes. There are fifteen questions, three for each of five dimensions, and each has four answers that describe a level of maturity from ad hoc to optimized.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. Scoring runs in your browser and the answers are not sent or saved. Closing the page clears them, so copy your results first if you want to keep them.
What do the maturity levels mean?
Ad hoc means work depends on individuals. Developing means standards exist but are uneven. Defined means roles, processes and measures are documented and mostly followed. Optimized means the model is measured and improved on a schedule.
Does this compare me with other companies?
No. A comparison needs many respondents answering the same questions, and this sample has none. It shows where you stand against the four levels, and where your own strengths and gaps are.
Can several people take it and compare results?
Yes, in PulseLake. Run the same questions with a team or a client, see the spread of answers by dimension, and compare results over time. This page is a short sample of what a full assessment does.
